As a College and Career Readiness Student Advisor, you will have the opportunity to play a critical role in shaping the futures of high school youth by providing comprehensive guidance and support in their post-secondary planning through college access and career development journeys. By working closely with students and their families, you will help them navigate the complex college planning, admission, and financial aid processes, and empower them to identify and pursue their college goals. Additionally, you will be an instrumental part of our career exploration initiatives, including the Work, Learn and Grow! program and the Summer Youth Employment Program, which provide students with valuable hands-on learning experiences and opportunities to explore different career paths. This is a highly rewarding and fulfilling position that will allow you to make a meaningful impact on the lives of young people.
Responsibilities
- Build and sustain a culture of college and career knowledge.
- Work with high school students on college and career preparedness.
- Develop and facilitate workshops and activities to expose and prepare participants for college and career exploration.
- Assist with the college application process for college-bound participants.
- Connect participants with relevant resources important for post-secondary success (SAT courses, college prep mentors, additional tutoring, school/placement visits, etc.).
- Assist students and parents with navigating the financial aid process.
- Coordinate with the College and Career Assistant Director to provide differentiated college prep support to participants according to their individual plans in small groups and one-on-one settings.
- Create interactive lessons that will assist youth to develop academic techniques: goal setting, career planning, study skills, organization skills, and time management.
- Work closely with students’ guidance counselors or school staff for additional assistance.
- Maintain a welcoming and effective environment for all participants.
- Outreach to various program participants and their families via telephone and email regarding post-secondary preparedness and program attendance.
- Assist with SYEP and WLG through workshops, instruction, recruitment, and enrollment.
- Develop meaningful relationships, track performance measures, and update participant files regularly.
- Attend all relevant meetings, trainings, workshops, and outside events.
- Other duties as assigned by supervisor.
Qualifications
- Bilingual (Spanish preferred) strongly desired.
- Experience working in college readiness programming preferred.
- Excellent interpersonal skills.
- Bachelor’s degree in a related field or some college with at least two years of relevant work experience.
- Experience working with high school students or academic programs.
- Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
- High motivation and willingness to work as part of a team to promote successful outcomes for youth.
- Strong leadership, mentoring, and team-building skills.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective professional relationships with youth.
- Excellent punctuality, attendance, and reliability is a must.
- Computer literate with knowledge of Microsoft Office programs (Word, Outlook, Excel, etc.), Google Suite/Office 365, and online platforms such as Google Classroom, Zoom, and Microsoft Teams.
Schedule: Monday – Friday, up to 25 hours per a week; some evenings and/or weekends may be required. Part-time; temporary; one-year contract is potentially renewable.
Compensation: $20.00 – $23.00/hour
Work Location: Queens Technical High School in Long Island City, Aviation High School in Long Island City, and/or partner SCS schools based in Sunnyside, Queens or in surrounding neighborhoods.
