The College Readiness Program Assistant will serve as the main support person for the College and Career Readiness Assistant Director, as well as the rest of the College & Career team leaders. The individual in this role will be an instrumental part of career exploration initiatives, including the Work, Learn and Grow! (WLG) program and the Summer Youth Employment Program (SYEP), which provides students with valuable hands-on learning experiences and opportunities to explore different career paths. This rewarding and fulfilling position will make a meaningful impact on the lives of young people.
Sunnyside Community Services (SCS) is a multi-service, community-based organization providing a broad range of services to approximately 16,000 people each year. Our services include pre-kindergarten and after-school programs; college prep and career programs for teens and young adults; supports for immigrants; a vibrant senior center; dedicated home care services; support and assistance for family caregivers; and a social adult day program for people with cognitive and physical impairments.
Responsibilities
- Build and sustain a culture of college knowledge.
- Assist with managing the College Readiness email account.
- Handle administrative assistant tasks such as emails, timesheet reminders, and scheduling meetings.
- Contact various program participants and their families via telephone and e-mail regarding post-secondary preparedness and program attendance.
- Participate in all education-related events including but not limited to college fairs, scholarship program, college trips, etc.
- Develop, prepare, and strategize flyers, newsletters, bulletin boards, and other promotional and informational materials in multiple languages.
- Recruit students for program with school staff.
- Support Student Advisors.
- Work with high school students such as helping develop and co-presenting college readiness workshops.
- Ensure education timelines and documentation requirements are met.
- Maintain a welcoming and effective environment for all participants.
- Develop meaningful relationships, track performance metrics, and update participant files regularly.
- Assist with SYEP and WLG through workshops, instruction, recruitment, and enrollment, and program closeout procedures.
- Attend all relevant meetings, trainings, workshops, and outside events.
- Other duties as assigned by supervisor.
Qualifications
- Bilingual (Spanish/English) highly preferred.
- Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
- Ability to follow instructions, take initiative, and possess team-building skills.
- Excellent interpersonal skills.
- Preferably DOE fingerprinted.
- Bachelor’s degree in a related field or some college with at least two years of relevant work experience.
- Experience working with high school students or academic programs.
- Experience working in college readiness programming preferred.
- High motivation and willingness to work as part of a team to promote successful outcomes for youth.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective professional relationships with youth.
- Excellent punctuality, attendance, and reliability is a must.
- Computer literate with knowledge of Microsoft Office programs (Word, Outlook, Excel, etc.), Google Suite/Office 365, and online platforms such as Google Classroom, Zoom, and Microsoft Teams.
Schedule: Monday – Friday, up to 25 hours per a week; some evenings and/or weekends may be required; one-year contract renewable.
Compensation: $20.00 – $22.50 per hour
Work location: Aviation High School and Queens Technical High School
