SCS seeks a temporary full-time Family Literacy Coordinator to spearhead the Family Literacy Program. This role demands a significant investment of time and effort to meet the program’s intensive objectives, including curriculum oversight, staff management, and participant engagement, within a specific timeframe. The Family Literacy Coordinator will report to the Program Director for ESOL, ensuring high-level oversight and alignment with the organization’s broader goals. The Coordinator will support the ESOL Program as needed.
SCS is proud to announce the pilot of a Family Literacy Program, targeting 15 parents, in partnership with the Department of Youth and Community Development (DYCD). This initiative represents SCS’s commitment to expanding our comprehensive adult literacy services to include family literacy, recognizing the profound impact of parental involvement on child development and educational success. Through this program, we aim to strengthen the fabric of our community by equipping parents and children with necessary literacy skills, fostering a supportive and educated family unit.
The Family Literacy Program is part of the Adult and Immigrant Services division at Sunnyside Community Services (SCS). Adult and Immigrant Services offers English language classes to immigrant community members, assists in providing resources and benefits to vulnerable community members, provides free legal immigration consultations; engages with community members on public health initiatives; and advocates alongside, and on behalf of, immigrants and low-income adults.
Responsibilities
Program Planning and Implementation
- Lead the strategic planning and execution of the Family Literacy Program, ensuring alignment with SCS’s mission and DYCD’s objectives.
- Supervise the curriculum development process, encompassing 312 hours of curriculum design and 80 hours of lesson planning, ensuring the materials meet the needs of family literacy.
- Coordinate and manage educational sessions, including 120 hours of ESOL instruction, 80 hours of child development instruction, and regular parent and child sessions, to facilitate interactive learning.
Participant Advisement
- Actively engage with enrolled families, providing ongoing support, guidance, and educational advisement.
- Develop and maintain relationships with participants, ensuring they are connected with the appropriate internal services and community resources to meet their diverse needs.
- Conduct outreach to recruit participants and maintain high program enrollment and engagement.
Data Collection, Tracking, and Reporting
- Oversee the collection and maintenance of participant data, attendance records, and progress notes for comprehensive reporting to DYCD and SCS.
- Ensure accurate and timely tracking of programmatic data, utilizing both funder-mandated and internal databases and monitoring tools.
- Collaborate with the Director of Adult and Immigrant Services to prepare for audits, generate reports, and assess program effectiveness.
Qualifications
- Bilingual and able to read, write, and speak Spanish proficiently.
- Bachelor’s degree in education, preferred; and 1-2 years relevant experience.
- Strong interpersonal skills, including oral and written communication.
- Flexibility, patience, resourcefulness, a willingness to learn, and and an ability to work independently and creatively.
Schedule: Full-time; 35 hours/week; January – June 2024
Salary: $55,000 – $60,000
Reports to: Program Director, ESOL
